Fourth Assignment

1. The character Winston is an important element. I know he's a character because, it's obvious, he has a name. His job in the text is to show how terrible the society is. If everyone were happy, I don't think there's be a point to the book.

The character Big Brother is a symbol. He symbolizes oppressive government. Since I think the book is mostly about how oppressive governments can be, Big Brother's job is to focus the readers' distaste for society.

Last, Julia symbolizes rebelliousness. She tries to do the opposite of what she's supposed to do at every turn. I think she's there to show Winston what he could do, and how he could act if he wanted to.
